Why do you procrastinate and how to beat it?

I have been dealing with procrastination for as long as I can remember. If there was an Olympic Category for the world’s biggest procrastinator, I would destroy my competition or I would like to think so.

You see we all think that we are special, we either think our problems are special or we are special in something in a positive way. But that’s not true. If you think about it logically — which you don’t because you think inside your mind, not on paper — there are 7 billion people in the world and you think that you are the only one like that? Do you think that no one out of 7 billion is a better procrastinator than you?

You know your mind and my mind — which is writing about itself and will shit on itself in the next line — both are stupid, blinded by cognitive biases, vices, and a sense of right and wrong.

If your mind was so special and not wrong all the time? How come have you not achieved any of your goals? How come you get excited by a new idea do it for 2 days and realize it takes discipline and hard work and you give up like a bitch?

Let me tell you a secret that you may or may not know, Nothing good is easy in life. Nothing at all. I am telling this from experience. I always watched videos online that told me to find and follow my passion. So I decided to set out on a journey to find my passion.

I tried to be an e-sports player but found out I don’t have the PC requirements to play better. So I decided to work as a designer to make some money to get a good PC to be an e-sports player. I did it. And then I found out it takes hours of work and boring practice to be an e-sports player.

So now I want to be a pro graphic designer — be good at drawing and all technical stuff — surprise surprise that was also super hard and I procrastinated. Then I wanted to be a coder and guess what I procrastinated because it was difficult. I even procrastinated watching anime.

Now, I have decided to be a writer. And when you become a writer you start to understand how things work at a deeper level, because if you don’t you won’t succeed. I kinda have an idea of how to beat procrastination. Bear in mind you will have to fight and beat it every single time, it’s not like you learn this solution and you become invulnerable to procrastination. That’s now how it works.

To understand how to beat someone/thing you must understand how that someone/something thinks.

So how does procrastination work?

Procrastination occurs when the task is too big or at least that’s what your mind thinks for you.

When that happens you freeze, the reason could be you want it to be perfect and you are not good enough to start that, or you don’t have the money to do so, but when you think about all the reasons that someone can present you to not do a task logically they are all so stupid.

Here’s a list of all the universal excuses people use with counters -:

  • I don’t know how to do it yet — I am not good on camera, I don’t know how to write, I don’t know how to draw, I don’t how to drive, I am not confident. You do know how you learn right? By Actually doing it. I used this excuse to procrastinate on this blog for a month.
  • People will think I am weird for doing this — weird for making a youtube channel, weird for making a blog, weird for going out, weird for working out. Nobody will think you are weird unless you are doing something similar to masturbating in public.
  • I can’t go to the gym because I am too skinny or too fat. Well you go to the gym to be not skinny and fat
  • I don’t feel like doing it. Why would you it’s not a biological need, you have to push through even if you don’t feel like doing it.
  • I will do it tomorrow because I am not good enough today and magically I will be an expert tomorrow. I don’t need to tell you how stupid this is.
  • I am not smart or I am not made for this. ( Congratulations on chopping your own dick off). Why are you downplaying yourself, take out a journal and write why you think this.
  • I don’t have money. Then figure out how to make money.
  • I don’t have time. Fair enough, you also don’t have time to watch youtube, anime, movies, talk with friends play video games.
  • It’s too hard. No shit sherlock who said it was easy?
  • People will Criticize me. If they don’t, how will you improve?
  • I have to take care of my family and the list goes on.

You are most likely to procrastinate on things that require you to delay gratification such as working out, writing a book, or working on your business. Because these things are not “easy” or “fun” at the moment so you feel Resistance to doing them.

But the more important the thing is for your mental and physical growth the more resistance you feel toward doing it. Let me tell you what I feel the most resistance towards doing, anything that involves dealing with people, I am a very chill and laid-back guy and I try to be my self and people get offended by that, sometimes, sometimes I am made fun of.

The solution to this is So simple that you will say what, it’s that simple, it’s simple but not easy.

JUST DO IT

You have to acknowledge that, whatever your mind tells you is bullshit and do it despite that.
